Bloodstone
Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is an opaque jasper stone belonging to the quartz group. It varies in color from apple green to dark green and is often splashed with bright red iron oxide. This mysterious stone was valued in ancient times and was used as the birthstone for March.
Bloodstone is commonly found in India, Australia, Brazil, China and the United States, India being the major source.
This stone has a hardness value of 6.5-7.0 and has a refraction rating on 1.530-1.539.
Bloodstone is believed to work to promote your body’s own healing powers. It is believed to relieve physical disharmonies and weaknesses.
Both pagans and Christians value this stone for very different reasons. Christians in medieval times believed the stone was first formed when drops of Christ’s blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. The stone has often been carved into the shape of a cross for this reason.
Witches and Occultists believe the stone will help deliver to them their fondest wishes. It’s often placed on their altars for protection and energy. As far back as the 14th century when vampires are believed to have first inhabited Romania, a gypsy made a special trip to Rome to steal a bloodstone to give to the king of the vampires as a peace offering. It was believed that the bloodstone eternally dripped the blood of saints. With this seemingly endless supply of blood, it was believed that vampires could survive without having to kill any more innocent people.
Bloodstone is said to keep you grounded, thus used as a sort of good luck charm when flying in an airplane or while on a cruise ship.
