Rose Quartz
Rose quartz varies in color from peach to pink and it is, of course, part of the quartz family. Quartz is the most common mineral on earth. It is often identified by its six-sided, prism shape and hardness value. It is a component of nearly every type of rock. It’s found all over the globe, in every country. The best quality crystals come from Brazil, Africa and even Arkansas. The rose variety is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Scotland, Spain, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine and New York.
Rose quartz has a hardness value of 7 but even so, you need to be careful when handling it as chips and cracks are common.
Most rose quartz is dyed to achieve the desired color, though there are some natural occurrences.
Rose quartz is used as a birthstone for January. It’s the anniversary stone for the second anniversary and it is the US State gemstone for South Dakota.
Rose quartz is highly sought after for its medicinal and spiritual/emotional uses. Rose quartz is known as The Heart Stone, partly because it’s believed useful in healing heart ailments. (It’s also believed to help rejuvenate the liver and kidneys and heal sexual disorders. In addition it supposed to help the adrenal glands, combat stress, lessen the effects of asthma and provide relief for burns and pain.) But rose quartz is more likely known as The Heart Stone because of its emotional properties.
This stone is said to balance the emotions and open the heart. It is believed to foster the joy of life and happiness and bring about contentment in love. Some believe it fills one with optimism, tenderness and gentleness.
In addition to helping with romantic love, rose quartz is believed to enhance all other forms of love as well, including self-love, platonic and maternal forms of love. It’s said to "emanate unconditional love" and is supposed to help us attract positive aspects of love into our lives.
Rose quartz is probably one of the most prized stones for its mystical properties. Sleeping with it under your pillow is supposed to help you release the pain of the past through your dreams. It’s supposed to help heal the child inside us all. It’s believed to bring about a feeling of self worth and self-empowerment. People believe it can be of great help and comfort to brokenhearted people who have recently lost a lover.
Indians carry it in their amulets. Nurses have used rose quarts to aid survival in neonatal care units.
